CMJ Facilitators Rasha and Motasem Back from Japan

Rasha Dababneh and Motasem Yasin, two lead facilitators at the Children’s Museum Jordan, have returned from a three month training program “Intensive Course on Museology” in Osaka, Japan. The program is implemented by the National Museum of Ethnology and organized by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The Intensive course on Museology was held over more than three months from September 14th 2009 to November 11th 2009.

Rasha and Motasem were two of only 10 curators and museum professionals joining the course from six countries around the world, namely, Armenia, Indonesia, Jordan, Magnolia, Peru and Thailand. The primary objective of this program is to provide participants with the general and fundamental knowledge stemming from the history of museum activities in Japan.

Rasha and Motasem had many opportunities to attend lectures by a large number of lecturers in different specialties and also to visit numerous museums and cultural sites throughout Japan. They also attended optional workshops they selected according to their interests.  Through this program Rasha and Motasem were able to share knowledge, experience and information among Japanese experts, international participants and themselves.

We appreciate the great effort extended by the National Museum of Ethnology and all related institutions.

79′FJORD

Expedition to the Unknown

(Unconventional and immersive theatrical performance in an igloo!)

79Fjord at the Children's Museum Jordan

Direction:             Leo Sykes
Scenography:     Antonella Diana
Actors:                  Hisako Miura (Niels Peter Høeg-Hagen & the Mother of the Sea)
Sandra Pasini (Jørgen Brønlund & the Spirit Animal)
Annemarie Waagepetersen: (Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen & the Ice maiden)
Light:                     Kim Rostgaard and the ensemble

Production:        Teatert OM

79′ Fjord” the production

The performance 79′Fjord – Expedition to the Unknown is inspired by the Denmark-Expedition to North East Greenland 1906-1908. The expedition is one of the most important expeditions because of its scientific outcome in the field of measuring, ornithology and fauna among many things. The term unknown point is used to identify the missing points in order to draw the geographical map of the northern part of Greenland, which was one of the main goals of the expedition.

An igloo is a good place to gather to hear stories of heroes, adventures, tragedies and the mysterious beings of the invisible world. In our igloo where the audience is actually sitting we will tell the story of three young men who ventured up the unknown coastline of Greenland in 1907 in order to complete the map of this giant nation of ice. They were to make the ´unknown point´ known.

“79′ Fjord” Theatre – History – Science

Before the performance, the staff of the children’s museum will give a short introduction to chosen elements of the expedition – elements that the children will recognize during the performance. The themes will be: day/night, map making, transportation, food/hunting, animals and mythology.

“79′ Fjord” Behind the scenes

After the performance, the audience will be invited to discover the techniques behind some of the scenographic, sound and shadow effects used during the performance. They will experience how by simple means one can transmit physical reactions which stimulate the audience interactively.

Why Teatret OM at the Children’s Museum Jordan?

At the Children’s Museum Jordan we aim to offer unique learning experiences related to sciences and art to foster creativity and curiosity. We like to expose our children to diverse experiences and different cultures. An expedition nourishes curiosity; it is a fascinating adventure, a journey to discover new land. For our children who live in a warm desert land, it is an opportunity to get them exposed to a world unknown to them and learn about the process of a real expedition to a land of ice in its most fun, challenging and sad moments. It is an expedition for children to the world of fantasy and theater production. It is also an invitation to take an expedition to discover the unknown points in ourselves and in others. The aim of the project is to expand children’s curiosity and knowledge in the arts, history and sciences through a meaningful theater performance based on a true scientific story.
